We are typical moms who also happen to be political junkies. Dawn has a history degree and political science minor from Stetson University and was just accepted to an MBA program in Central Florida. Gayla has a political science degree from the University of Florida and recently finished her graduate degree in Public Administration from the University of Memphis.

The easiest way to describe us would be as members of the opposing teams in the current lexicon of politi-speak. Gayla is the Progressive Democrat and Dawn the Conservative Republican.  But those descriptions alone provide a very false characterization.

We see ourselves more simply as American Mothers.

When we met in 2001, we became fast friends because we both had political campaigning backgrounds and were working as marketing and public relations professionals. Roughly the same age and married the same length of time, we had a lot in common to say the least. More than that, however, we shared the rather unusual trait (for our generation of Xers) of being community organization joiners.

As we moved from our 20’s to our 30’s, we both became involved hybrid stay-at-home-working moms: Gayla as a Mother of Twins moonlighting as a writer and PR consultant, and Dawn as a Mother of Three moonlighting as both a Republican campaign manager and a law office manager.

We often found ourselves in conversations centered around the lack of leadership models for women and the need for a change in “how things are done” by our political, civic and community leaders. We have also become increasingly aghast when people express such surprise that we could be such close friends – being from opposing teams and all.

We began to realize that mothers work together every day, in every community and at every school because we share a common core value that we can all easily identify and understand. Starting from a place of respect rather than the “enemy mentality” allows us to work with women from diverse ideologies to accomplish our shared goals. Such has always been the case for mothers, who must forge a community safety net around their children.

The idea for this project came from an article we read contrasting the political leadership styles of the Father Knows Best figure versus the Egalitarian Parent. It became obvious no leadership model seemed to exist for the Strong Mother – despite historical and modern evidence that it is more often than not, the mother model that holds communities together.

We are not about rehashing the past, promoting a particular party or a specific existing ideology. We want to create a leadership model that embraces some of a mother’s most important skills: civility, community, compassion, and doing what it takes to get the job done. Mothers have one over-riding priority and know that about one another. It is time to remind our government and civic leaders that they too have one priority from which to derive the respect needed to accomplish the important tasks at hand. Focusing on our differences will accomplish nothing. Focusing on what core values we all share will transform the chest thumping gridlock that has been destroying our nation for too long.
